How to Stand Out on LinkedIn - Part 1
LinkedIn is quickly becoming on of the best social media platforms to be on especially if you're looking to grow your professional network. There seems to be a new interest around it too, courtesy of Gary Vee. But that wasn't always the case.
LinkedIn was launched in 2002 and started getting traction, at least when I first saw it, around 2008/2009. It was mainly used for posting your resume on your profile, connecting with people you worked with, mingled with recruiters, or did some job searching. I'm sure people back then found business opportunities but I think most just used it for a place people could find you, especially with the recession in full force and who worked where was constantly in flux.
Eventually, more people got on the platform and started posting more content. In my industry it was still a lot of recruiters, job hunting skill posts, and relevant news article re-shares. From 2008 to 2018, I pretty much just accepted any request to connect, and rarely posted. 2019 and 2020 I started becoming more active on the app, posting more consistently, and started to see a lot more engagement. Began connecting with many more people and thought, hey, this is really going somewhere.
But like any app, there are a lot of do's and do not's you want to be aware of. I thought I'd share my take on how to stand out on LinkedIn without looking obnoxious. This will be a multi-part series and cover the following:
1. What you need on your profile
2. What type of content you should share
3. How to "slide" into the DM's appropriately (THIS IS PROBABLY THE MOST IMPORTANT TOPIC)
4. And last, Standing Out
LinkedIn is an amazing tool to get your face and name out there, but it's easy to get caught up chasing digital numbers. Remember, its really about building a personal network of great connections. These don't happen overnight. You want to treat it like any close friendship you have, and build it on trust and friendship.
